A Lesson Learned

A short story for you....

I was enjoying my favourite beverage on Friday night in London (corner of Grosvenor St and New Bond Street to be precise) when one of London's finest decided that they would like to look after my bag for me.....very thoughtful.

As payment for this "service" they decided to keep my Macbook, charger, iPod and car keys. However they were most thoughtful to leave the paperwork I had carefully stowed along with my passport and house keys.

If I were to complain about any part of the service I think it would have to be the way in which they returned my bag.....via those fantastic fellows at the RNLI Lifeboat Station in Chiswick (http://www.rnli.org.uk/rnli_near_you/east/stations/ChiswickLondonW4). They fished it out the Thames on Saturday morning! By the way they perform a vital service funded entirely via public donation...so if you are feeling flush head over to their site.

This got me thinking about how one might go about getting one over the thief next time the odds are against me and it gets stolen.....

So....this applies to Apple MacBook/MacBook Pro/iMac/Mac Mini owners:

I have done the following:

  1. Enable the Open Firmware password on your mac (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106482)

  2. Purchase the following application: http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/ this is an ingenious bit of software....read the site to find out. http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/faq.php ....and for around £26 for cover for 5 machines it's not going to break the bank.

  3. Create a "honeypot" account on your mac. One that is say a guest account that has no password but cannot administer the machine. You want the thief to think it works to capture their face.....see undercover above!

Whilst this won't retrieve my MacBook....I'll have a better chance at recovery next time.

Just thought I'd share this with you.
